Transferring Ink to Candles

Making personalized candles is easier than you think.  Today with some help from the kids we made some candles to give to my parents on Valentine's Day.

You will need some regular paper, tissue paper, tape, sharpies or markers, a candle, wax paper, and a heat gun.

First, I taped a piece of tissue paper, about the size of my candle, to a piece of copy paper.  Markers will bleed through the tissue paper pretty easily so you will need something to protect your table, and it was easier for the kids to draw on the tissue paper when taped to the "paper".

When your little artist is done, remove the tissue paper from the copy paper.  Cut out your design, and place it on to your candle.  It is important to cut away as much of the excess tissue paper as you can.

Next, you are going to take a piece of wax paper that is larger than your candle.  Pull it tight around your candle, and use your heat gun to melt your design into the candle.  Moving the heat gun in a back and forth motion for about 30-40 seconds.  Be careful of your fingers, the heat gun will be hot.

Once you have heated the entire design gently peel back your wax paper and make sure the entire design is adhered to the candle.  If not just repeat with the wax paper and heat gun.

A very cute gift for the Grandparents.  Don't you think?

It got me to thinking .... wouldn't it be cool if you could use images from the computer and do the same thing?  Just think of the personalized candles you could make.

Guess what, you can!

I very carefully taped a piece of tissue paper to a piece of copy paper, making sure there were no edges and the tissue paper was completely flat.  Then I crossed my finger and sent it through the ink jet printer.  Seriously, my husband would not have been happy if I had jammed up the printer.  So, I didn't tell him until I was finished and it had worked.  :)

  33. I found this on pinterest im really impressed, can u use a hair dryer or is that not hot enough

  34. Any ideas on what I could be doing wrong? I've tried several times using a hair dryer and it's been a total craft fail. The candle starts melting, the wax paper is dripping, and yet a few minutes later, after it has cooled, the tissue paper is still visible on the surface of the candle. If you let it sit the tissue paper starts peeling off. Could it be due to cheap candles? Advice would be appreciated, I'm not used to failing at a craft!

  35. Can you use something else instead of wax paper?

    ReplyDelete
  36. You don't have to use wax paper, this can be done with just tissue paper and a heat gun... but the results are not as good, and I am not quite sure what else you could use that wouldn't stick to the candle.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I guess I will have to try again with a heat gun.

  38. i absolutely love this idea! will have to give it a try. i already added this candle project to my 'stumbleupon' favorites :)

  39. I do this but instead of markers I use stamps. I stamp whatever I want onto tissue paper, the follow steps above. :)

  43. This is soo cute! Just to clarify...the tissue paper stays on the candle? I would be worried about that when it comes time to burn the candle unless this is only for deco purposes.

    ReplyDelete
  44. My3Monkeys, yes the tissue paper kinda melts into the candle. I had no problem when I used my candles, but still it is always a good idea to use caution.

  47. I used this idea for Christmas gifts. For grandparents, I printed a picture of my kids onto tissue paper and put it on the candle. They were a huge hit! For my MIL, I printed off the family farm brand and put it onto a candle...she loved it! One thing I learned...stick with a white candle unless you are certain your candle is the same color all the way thru. I bought some 2 pks of candles at Hobby Lobby, one white, one ivory. While working with the ivory, i got the wax too hot i guess and the outer ivory layer of the candle peeled of with the wax paper! I managed to somewhat fix it, but I had absolutely no problems with the white ones.

  48. Hey there- I was wondering, would a hair dryer work instead of a heat gun?

    Great idea!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can, but the results are mixed... depends mostly on the hair dryer.

  49. I did not read all the posts, so someone may have said this. You can stamp designs on the tissue paper and do this same process. I have even imbossed designs on the candle.

  50. What about with a laser printer?!?!?!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It doesn't work as well with a laser printer because the ink sits on top of the paper, but with a inkjet the ink is absorbed into the tissue paper.

  51. Hi, i absolutely loved this idea and i will be definately giving this a go! Can i just ask that it is safe to burn the candle with the design on there?
    Many thanks

  55. Thank you for this awesome idea! Today my kids and I made these for the Grandmas / Great Grandmas for Mother's Day. I took a recent photograph of the kiddos and printed it on tissue paper then placed it on one side of the candle. On the other side I put their names and "2012" - I had them hand write their names in marker on regular white paper, scanned them into the computer, then printed them onto tissue paper. SO much easier than trying to coach them not to write too hard on the tissue! To get the tissue through the printer I used masking tape on all 4 sides to attach it to the bond paper. Went through easily, no muss, no fuss!

  56. @steffenson, thank you for the great idea of how to put the kids' names on the candle. I just made them tonight and they turned out beautifully. The Grandmas are going to love them on Sunday. I also wanted to say that I used a hair dryer and it worked great, even on a cheap candle. I set it on high for the heat and low for the blowing speed. Hope that helps the people trying to make the hair dyers work.
