Transferring Ink to Candles

Making personalized candles is easier than you think.  Today with some help from the kids we made some candles to give to my parents on Valentine's Day.

You will need some regular paper, tissue paper, tape, sharpies or markers, a candle, wax paper, and a heat gun.

First, I taped a piece of tissue paper, about the size of my candle, to a piece of copy paper.  Markers will bleed through the tissue paper pretty easily so you will need something to protect your table, and it was easier for the kids to draw on the tissue paper when taped to the "paper".

When your little artist is done, remove the tissue paper from the copy paper.  Cut out your design, and place it on to your candle.  It is important to cut away as much of the excess tissue paper as you can.

Next, you are going to take a piece of wax paper that is larger than your candle.  Pull it tight around your candle, and use your heat gun to melt your design into the candle.  Moving the heat gun in a back and forth motion for about 30-40 seconds.  Be careful of your fingers, the heat gun will be hot.

Once you have heated the entire design gently peel back your wax paper and make sure the entire design is adhered to the candle.  If not just repeat with the wax paper and heat gun.

A very cute gift for the Grandparents.  Don't you think?

It got me to thinking .... wouldn't it be cool if you could use images from the computer and do the same thing?  Just think of the personalized candles you could make.

Guess what, you can!

I very carefully taped a piece of tissue paper to a piece of copy paper, making sure there were no edges and the tissue paper was completely flat.  Then I crossed my finger and sent it through the ink jet printer.  Seriously, my husband would not have been happy if I had jammed up the printer.  So, I didn't tell him until I was finished and it had worked.  :)

    3. Absolutely love this! But - I keep getting wax running out the bottom of the waxed paper, and I often have flat patches and lumpy bits when I am finished. I noticed that if I do it with expensive candles, the $10 spotlight ones, the result is smoother than with the same size $1.99 ones from the dollar shop. Am I getting too close with my heat gun, and does the wax need to come right through the waxed paper? I can sure see when the wax from the paper sticks to the tissue, but will that be enough to keep the whole thing in place?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Any ideas on what I could be doing wrong? I've tried several times using a hair dryer and it's been a total craft fail. The candle starts melting, the wax paper is dripping, and yet a few minutes later, after it has cooled, the tissue paper is still visible on the surface of the candle. If you let it sit the tissue paper starts peeling off. Could it be due to cheap candles? Advice would be appreciated, I'm not used to failing at a craft!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Can you use something else instead of wax paper?

    ReplyDelete
  36. You don't have to use wax paper, this can be done with just tissue paper and a heat gun... but the results are not as good, and I am not quite sure what else you could use that wouldn't stick to the candle.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I guess I will have to try again with a heat gun.

  47. I used this idea for Christmas gifts. For grandparents, I printed a picture of my kids onto tissue paper and put it on the candle. They were a huge hit! For my MIL, I printed off the family farm brand and put it onto a candle...she loved it! One thing I learned...stick with a white candle unless you are certain your candle is the same color all the way thru. I bought some 2 pks of candles at Hobby Lobby, one white, one ivory. While working with the ivory, i got the wax too hot i guess and the outer ivory layer of the candle peeled of with the wax paper! I managed to somewhat fix it, but I had absolutely no problems with the white ones.

  49. I did not read all the posts, so someone may have said this. You can stamp designs on the tissue paper and do this same process. I have even imbossed designs on the candle.

    ReplyDelete
  50. What about with a laser printer?!?!?!

    ReplyDelete

    1. It doesn't work as well with a laser printer because the ink sits on top of the paper, but with a inkjet the ink is absorbed into the tissue paper.

  55. Thank you for this awesome idea! Today my kids and I made these for the Grandmas / Great Grandmas for Mother's Day. I took a recent photograph of the kiddos and printed it on tissue paper then placed it on one side of the candle. On the other side I put their names and "2012" - I had them hand write their names in marker on regular white paper, scanned them into the computer, then printed them onto tissue paper. SO much easier than trying to coach them not to write too hard on the tissue! To get the tissue through the printer I used masking tape on all 4 sides to attach it to the bond paper. Went through easily, no muss, no fuss!

    ReplyDelete
  56. @steffenson, thank you for the great idea of how to put the kids' names on the candle. I just made them tonight and they turned out beautifully. The Grandmas are going to love them on Sunday. I also wanted to say that I used a hair dryer and it worked great, even on a cheap candle. I set it on high for the heat and low for the blowing speed. Hope that helps the people trying to make the hair dyers work.

  66. I use freezer paper instead of taping the tissue to printer paper. Cut a piece of freezer paper to 8.5" X 11" . Very lightly iron a piece of tissue paper to the shiny side of the freezer paper. It will stick to the freezer paper, making it a little bit stiff and allows it to go through your printer without wadding up the tissue. After you print your image on the tissue, carefully peel off the tissue from the freezer paper. Trim closely to your image on the tissue and proceed with the directions listed above. I use an oven mitt on my hand when using the heat gun so I dont burn my fingers.

  67. I forgot to mention that Reynolds makes the freezer paper and it can be found on the same isle as foil.

    1. It is similar to the 2nd photo from the top. I just carfully taped a piece of tissue paper larger than I needed to a piece of plain white copy paper and feed it into the printer.

      Delete
    2. I print on tissue paper which i then decopatch on to tiles to make coasters and the method I use is to spray a piece of copy paper with repositionable glue (such as Crafter's Companion Stick and Spray - I'm sure lots of other brands are available) and then I felt it to make it a little less sticky before laying my tissue paper over. Then run it through the printer and then carefully peel the design off the copy paper. It's a delicate process, but when I first started I taped the edges and my particular printer made the tissue buckle and crease as it pulled it through so this is an alternative method if anyone is suffering with that problem.

  73. You can do this too with stamps on tissue paper. Just stamp on tissue paper place tissue on candle, secure or just hold it and use a hair dryer . The tissue paper will melt into the candle.

  95. I'm a bit concerned that the tissue paper could act as a wick and, under certain circumstances, cause a much bigger fire than you want from a candle. Adding flammable things to the outside of a candle is always a possible problem, though perhaps the tissue is too thin to do anything.

Only thing I could recommend for this process would be to limit the design to the very bottom inch or two of the candle, where the exterior wax may not melt anyway.

Don't mean to criticize something fun, but as a candle-maker who's concerned about candle safety, felt obligated to say something.

  119. Found this on one of the pages I follow on Facebook (I can't remember which page or would give them credit too, I saved your blog to my favorites)

I was all set out to buy a heat gun but we started sorting through my dad's tools (he passed away) and found a brand new heat gun.

I am making candles tonight for MIL, SILs and my mom. I am putting the kids names on their candles. Can't wait to see how they turn out. I'm so excited and can't wait to check your blog out more.
